AI Consultant vs. Implementing

Which one are you?

Most people mix these up.

AI Consulting and AI Implementation are not the same game.

Let’s break it down:

1. AI Consulting
You sell the thinking.

Pros:

  • High-margin, low overhead

  • You get paid for strategy, not hours

  • Positions you as an expert, not a technician

Cons:

  • Requires confidence and clarity

  • Clients expect answers, not just tools

  • Harder to productize without a system

Who it’s for:
You want to lead, not build. You’re great at spotting problems, designing smart solutions, and positioning yourself as the expert guide.

2. AI Implementation
You build the system.

Pros:

  • Tangible results clients can see

  • Easier to sell if you’re showing demos

  • Opportunity for long-term retainers

Cons:

  • More time-intensive

  • You become “the tool guy” if not careful

  • Can lead to scope creep without strong boundaries

Who it’s for:
You like building. You want to be hands-on with tools, automations, and tech — and you’re okay being the backend wizard.

Smartest Play?
Depends on your skills, however → for most of us; Start with consulting.

Sell clarity. Frame the opportunity. Then you could upsell into implementation (aka, partner with someone who can do the implementing for/with you).

The leverage is in the thinking, not the tool.
